G. Chesterton - Capitalism and Communism rest on the same idea: a Centralization of Wealth destroying Private Property

Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874–1936), was a poet and essayist.

In his work The End of the Armistice, Chesterton wrote:

"both capitalism and communism rest on the same idea: a centralization of wealth which destroys private property."

And in his work As I Was Saying, he wrote:

"For communism is the child and heir of capitalism, and the son would still greatly resemble his father even if he had really killed him."

He also wrotes:

"Capitalism and Communism are so very nearly the same thing in ethical essence, that it would not be strange if they did take leaders from the same ethnological elements"

This is not so astonishing from the viewpoint of Hegelian Dialectic. But maybe it's just that, like Feynman said, even in front of logical facts people don't "put two and two together".

By the way a french humorist Coluche used to say : "Capitalism is the exploitation of man by man. Communism is the inverse." :)

well, what is your opinion? You did not say. What do you mean by private property? Are you sure your not confused with socialism. It just seemed a little vague if you were trying to state your opinion. If you were not, disregard this comment.

GKC was a wise old bird. He was part of that group of intelectual giants in the early 20th that included Russell, Shaw, Ibsen, Belloc, Wells, Orwell many more, when ideas were publicly discussed by educated people instead of spun by hacks and pundits. Changed days.

capitalism |?kap?tl?iz?m|

noun

an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.

Nope do not see the similarities. NOW PROGRESSIVISM or STATE CAPITALISM which is really socialism and Communism are of this definition..... I think someone is quoting Chesterton out of context maybe???
