The Art of Seeing by Aldous Huxley

I felt upon an ads about a program called "Program for Better Vision" which pretends to improve your vision so that you could get rid off your eyeglasses even at an old age - I'm not yet very old but do wear some eyeglasses.

Well, being an usual skeptics, I thought immediately It was probably one of these miracles scams. But I always give some chance to these kind of guys and made some research on Internet and found this interesting article about famous Aldous Huxley:

"The idea of better vision without glasses was first developed by the American doctor, Dr. William Bates, over sixty years ago. Bates, an ophthalmologist, observed that glasses simply worsened your vision as the eyes quickly adjusted to the artificial lens. Accordingly, instead of glasses, he developed a series of eye and body exercises to improve your vision. His pioneering book, Better Eyesight Without Glasses, gives the specific exercises.

Aldous Huxley, the great English author, found out about the Bates method in 1939. With the help of Margaret D. Corbett, Bates disciple, Huxley began to do the exercises. “At sixteen I had to depend on Braille for my reading and a guide for my walking. Thanks to the Bates' method I am now wearing no glasses, reading and all without strain...My vision... is about twice as good as it used to be when I wore spectacles, before I had learned the art of seeing.” After learning the art of seeing Huxley wrote a book with that name as an expression of gratitude to Dr. Bates and his followers. It was Huxley's book and Huxley's visual improvement that literally opened my eyes that I also could improve my vision."

My vision was perfect until my late 40's, when I required glasses for reading. I now need them for any close vision, and even find distance is getting a bit fuzzy. Some of this may be due to lots of computer work.

I've often wondered if glasses do indeed help to worsen vision - we seem to need them upgraded every few years. Thanks for the links - I'm going to check them out.

I just looked for Bates' book at the library yesterday! This is something I've been wanting to do, everyone suggests laser surgery (works wonderfully) but I don't want to cut my eyes!

I started reading at three and never stopped - books and now computer screens way too much have probably destroyed my vision. Time to fix this! I tried coming up with my own exercises but prefer some that have been tested already. What I'm truly hoping to do is post my current prescription and later my improved one, then hopefully me with NO GLASSES!

Hmm, just the titles of the book sections are odd, hope this works. Oh, no, it says it's imperative to discard glasses completely; who can do that? I can't. I'll figure out something.

Nice write-up! He actually became a writer due to his loss of vision in an accident in his early twenties. I was introduced to Huxley's work through my High School teacher in a very rural town. It was controversial for her to teach such works as A Brave New World but these are very powerful and insightful works. Such literature is very important to society along with books like 1984 and A Clockwork Orange which are frequently banned. See my commentary on the subject on my artist's blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2010/07/aldous-
